Always Warm Up Before Exercise

June 18th, 2008

You may be all ready to start your planned exercise workout, but if you simply jump straight into it without doing any warm up, you could be doing more harm than good to your body.

Everybody knew the importance of taking some time to do warm up before any exercise. The purpose is to condition and get our body ready for the more strenuous exercise. Doing warm up will literally increase the blood flow to the various muscles and increase our body and muscle temperature. This will improve our muscle elasticity and increase the flexibility and in the process, decrease the stiffness in the muscle and reducing the possible risk of injury or overstrains our muscles when we started the more tedious exercise.

Some people do their warm up by simply stretching their muscle and it is actually a wrong way to do warm up. Stretching or bending muscles is not a form of warm-up, it only helps to improve the muscle flexibility, but it won’t warm up our body. You can do some muscles stretching when doing your warm up exercise, but, don’t simply take that as you have done your warm up.

The best way to do warm up is to do the activity you are planning on doing at a lower pace. For example, if you are going for a jog, then do your warm up by jogging at a much slower speed for about 5 minutes. If you are going to play badminton, try doing a light workout like jogging around the courts, followed by some muscles stretching before the game; this will at least give your muscles some preparation for the coming activity.

Other types of warm up exercise can also be jog in place, spin on a stationary bicycle or light jogging for a few minutes. The idea is when you started to sweat, you are warmed up.

So, planned your own warm up exercise and remember to warm up before any intense exercise.
